| ABSTRACT The cochlear implant center at Tehran, Iran have been operated 3 post lingual deaf by the use of the nucleus 22 channel cochlear implant. 2 women and 1 man in the age of 23 to 33 operated in 1993 among the deaf patients one was deaf due to meningitis after head injury, one was deaf due to progressive hearing loss in childhood and other one was deaf for unknown. All patients has realistic expectation of the outcome of the treatment, also they had good social condition and normal intelligence. The speech perception in patients are evaluated at two times with speech processor only, first time before auditory training program and second time after training. The patients are trained three times a week for six months. The Persian (Iranian) speech perception material are recognition of vowels, consonants ,monosyllabic words, spondees and every day sentences and comprehension. The auditory training program including 5 steps, detection, discrimination, identification , recognition and comprehension. Every step consists various exercises, easy to difficult materials in close set and open set. The results obtained by the speech perception test showed that 3 patients all benefited form the implant after auditory training program. They used the prosthesis 16 hours a day.2 patients able understand open speech when using their cochlear implant only and combination with lip reading were able to perform normal conversation, one patient was able to perform normal conversation without lip reading, she is studying Arabic language in university at present.
